08. 1 Samuel

Reign of Saul

After 350 years of feeling different, the people wanted to be like the nations around them. God told Samuel, the prophet, to anoint Saul to be their first king. Shortly into his reign, he lost the anointing because he disrespected God. Jealous of David, Saul became a madman driven to take David’s life. Eventually, Saul and his sons were killed in battle.

A note from your Bible study mentor

You’ve done well. Let’s keep going and find out more about this imperfect king, David, the man God said was after his own heart. David becomes king during difficult circumstances. Through his mistakes, he shows us that repentance is essential.

As the study of the Israelite history continues, two books, 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles will be combined for each lesson as their stories overlap. Although they can be read separately, it is best to read them together.

What are your thoughts about David, his sin, his family?
