06. Joshua

Settling the new land

Joshua is the first of the historical books. As their new leader, he was responsible for leading the Israelites into the land God promised and dividing it among the twelve tribes. After their first victory at Jericho, they were soundly defeated at Ai. Through that loss, they learned that God was to be respected. The people worshiped and obeyed God as long as Joshua lived. A note from your Bible study mentor –

You are doing great! What do you think about the Hebrew people by now? Has it turned out well for them?

After Joshua dies, the people are led by a series of judges for over three hundred years. There is no central government at this time as recorded in the book of Judges.

You will read about how the people repeatedly wandered away from God, got into trouble, and were rescued when they repented and called out to God. When they prayed, God appointed a judge to lead them out of trouble.

One of the judges was a woman named Deborah.  Deborah
